Forex margin calculator with leverage
Margin is the part of your balance the broker sets aside while a trade is open. It depends on the position value and the leverage of your account.
How to use it
- Pick the instrument and check today's price in the settings.
- Enter the lots and your account leverage.
- Add the balance to see the margin level the trade leaves you with.
Worked example
1 lot EUR/USD at 1.1600 is worth 116,000 USD. At 1:100 the broker holds 1,160 USD. 0.10 lots of gold at 4,100 is 41,000 USD; at 1:200 the margin is 205 USD.
The formula
Margin = lots × contract size × price (in USD) ÷ leverage
Questions
Does higher leverage mean more risk?
Leverage lowers the margin held, not the loss per pip. The risk comes from the lot size; leverage only makes large positions possible.
Why is gold margin different at my broker?
Many brokers set lower leverage for gold, indices and crypto than for forex. Use the leverage your broker shows for that instrument.
What is margin level?
Equity ÷ used margin × 100. Below the broker's stop-out level trades are closed: see the margin level calculator.
