Crypto market hours: when Bitcoin is busiest
Crypto exchanges never close, so in theory you can trade at 3 a.m. on a Sunday. In practice volume, spreads and the size of moves change a lot through the day and the week. Trade when the market is awake.
The trading day in your time
Crypto follows the same daily rhythm as other markets because the same people and institutions trade it. The table shows the usual phases today in UTC and local times (Pakistan, India, Nigeria, South Africa, UAE); it follows the summer time changes in Europe and the US by itself.
| Phase | UTC | PKT | IST | WAT | SAST | GST |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Asian hours (often a range) | 00:00 โ 08:00 | 05:00 โ 13:00 | 05:30 โ 13:30 | 01:00 โ 09:00 | 02:00 โ 10:00 | 04:00 โ 12:00 |
| London morning | 08:00 โ 12:00 | 13:00 โ 17:00 | 13:30 โ 17:30 | 09:00 โ 13:00 | 10:00 โ 14:00 | 12:00 โ 16:00 |
| London + New York (busiest) | 12:00 โ 16:00 | 17:00 โ 21:00 | 17:30 โ 21:30 | 13:00 โ 17:00 | 14:00 โ 18:00 | 16:00 โ 20:00 |
| US afternoon | 16:00 โ 21:00 | 21:00 โ 02:00 | 21:30 โ 02:30 | 17:00 โ 22:00 | 18:00 โ 23:00 | 20:00 โ 01:00 |
| Quiet hours | 21:00 โ 00:00 | 02:00 โ 05:00 | 02:30 โ 05:30 | 22:00 โ 01:00 | 23:00 โ 02:00 | 01:00 โ 04:00 |
US economic data comes out at 08:30 New York time (12:30 UTC today) and the US stock market opens at 09:30 (13:30 UTC): these two moments often bring the biggest moves of the day.
Weekends
From Friday evening to Sunday evening most banks, funds and stock markets are closed. Crypto keeps trading, but with fewer participants: the order book is thinner, and a large order can move the price further than on a weekday. Many traders reduce size or stay flat at weekends, and Monday's Asian and London hours often react to whatever happened while the big players were away.
The CME Bitcoin futures gap
Regulated Bitcoin futures at CME have traded with a weekend break: from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening (US Central time). When spot Bitcoin moves over the weekend, CME's chart shows a gap between Friday's close and Sunday's open. Many traders watch these gaps and say they tend to fill. Some do, many take weeks, and some never fill, so a gap is a level to note, not a reason to trade. CME has announced plans to move its crypto futures towards round-the-clock trading; once that is live, the weekend gap disappears, so check CME's current trading hours.
Crypto CFDs on MT5 at the weekend
Brokers set their own hours for crypto CFDs. Some trade them seven days a week, some close them at the weekend, and many widen the spread or raise the margin from Friday night. Check the symbol's trading hours and swap in your platform before holding a crypto CFD over a weekend.
Choosing your hours
- Pick one or two windows that fit your day, for example the London open and the London + New York overlap, and trade only then.
- Check the news calendar: US inflation, jobs data and Fed decisions move crypto as much as the dollar.
- Use the sessions and killzones clock to see the windows in your own time, or the forex market hours for your country.
Worked example
A trader in Lahore works until 17:00 PKT. In summer the London and New York overlap is 17:00 โ 21:00 PKT (an hour later in winter), so the busiest part of the crypto day falls right after work. In summer US data at 12:30 UTC is 17:30 PKT and the US stock open is 18:30 PKT: a two-hour window covers both. Late at night (02:00 โ 05:00 PKT) the market is quietest.

Questions
What is the best time to trade crypto?
Usually when London and New York are both open, about 12:00 โ 16:00 UTC in summer (17:00 โ 21:00 PKT, 17:30 โ 21:30 IST; an hour later in winter), and around US economic data and the US stock market open. Volume and moves are largest then.
Is crypto trading open on Saturday and Sunday?
Crypto exchanges trade every day of the year. Liquidity is lower at weekends, and some brokers close or widen spreads on crypto CFDs, so check your platform.
What is the CME gap in Bitcoin?
The difference between CME Bitcoin futures' Friday close and Sunday open when spot moved over the weekend. Traders watch it as a level; it is not a reliable signal on its own.
Do forex sessions matter for Bitcoin?
Yes. The same banks, funds and traders are active, so Bitcoin's busiest hours follow the London and New York sessions.
