Leverage does not change what a trade can lose at your stop, but it decides where the exchange or broker closes the trade for you. Find that price before you enter and keep your stop loss well before it.

How to use it

  1. Choose crypto futures, gold or forex, and long or short.
  2. Crypto: enter the entry, the leverage and the margin you put in. For cross margin add the other free balance in the account; check the maintenance margin rate on your exchange's contract page.
  3. Gold and forex: enter the lots, the entry, your account equity, the leverage and your broker's stop-out level.
  4. Put your stop loss well before the price shown: a stop is a planned loss, a liquidation is the whole margin.

Worked example

Crypto: long BTC at 100,000 with 10× and 1,000 USDT isolated margin = 0.1 BTC (10,000 USDT). With a 0.5 % maintenance rate: (10,000 − 1,000) ÷ (0.1 × 0.995) = 90,452, 9.5 % below the entry. A short is liquidated at (10,000 + 1,000) ÷ (0.1 × 1.005) = 109,453. In cross mode with 1,000 USDT more, the long holds until 80,402.
Gold: 0.10 lots bought at 4,100 with 1,000 USD equity, 1:500 and a 50 % stop out: margin 82 USD; stop out at (4,100 − 100) ÷ 0.999 = 4,004.00, about $96 lower.

The formula

Crypto long: P = (entry × coins − collateral) ÷ (coins × (1 − mmr − fee)); short: P = (entry × coins + collateral) ÷ (coins × (1 + mmr + fee)). CFD long: P = (entry − equity ÷ (lots × contract)) ÷ (1 − stop-out % ÷ leverage)

Questions

How is the liquidation price calculated?

The position is closed when what is left of your margin, after the open loss, falls to the maintenance margin. For a long that is roughly entry × (1 − 1 ÷ leverage + maintenance rate); at 10× about 9.5 % below the entry.

Does it match my exchange's calculator?

Closely, when you enter the exchange's own maintenance margin rate and fee. Exchanges use the mark price, tiers for large positions and sometimes a maintenance amount, so the last digits can differ. ICC Terminal is not linked to any exchange.

Is cross margin safer than isolated?

Cross margin moves the liquidation further away because the whole balance backs the trade, but a liquidation then takes much more than one trade's margin. Isolated limits the loss to that margin.

What is the stop-out price for gold?

The gold price at which your margin level falls to the broker's stop-out level (often 50 %). With small equity and big lots it is close: 0.10 lots on a 1,000 USD account is stopped out after about $96.

How do I avoid liquidation?

Size the trade from your stop with the position size calculator, use lower leverage and keep the stop far before the liquidation price.
